In 1981, Fender-CBS hired William (Bill) Schultz, John McLaren, and Dan Smith away from the U.S. division of Yamaha. Schultz became the president of Fender-CBS, McLaren the managing director, and Smith was appointed the director of marketing for Fender electric guitars.
In an effort to improve Fender's market position, Smith orchestrated a revamping of the basic production model Stratocaster and by late 1981 the new model was introduced as the Standard Stratocaster. It featured a more accurate version of the pre-CBS smaller headstock (compared to the 1980 "Strat"); a four bolt neck plate; the somewhat "hotter" X-1 pickup (introduced in the 1980 "Strat" model) in the bridge position; and, a body end truss rod adjustment (no bullet). What it did retain from its predecessor was the 70s-style headstock decal. Otherwise, the 1981 Standard Stratocaster signaled the end of the CBS 70s style Stratocaster.
The "Smith Standard Stratocaster" was produced faithfully from 1981until early 1983, when for some reason the jack plug was moved to the lower tone knob position on the pick guard (what?!).
So, it's only those limited number of Fender's produced from 1981 to early 1983 that were the first version of the Standard Stratocaster that have come to be known on the street (and in third party literature) as the "Dan Smith Stratocaster". You won't see Smith's name on the headstock, or anywhere else on the instrument, but it's only fitting that Stratocaster enthusiasts have dubbed this model the "Smith Strat" in homage to the man who brought about such welcomed changes in the Stratocaster, and who, along with George Blanda and the FMIC team, would play an integral role in the creation of the 1987 American Standard.

this all original beauty is from 1982,its in kind of Relic condition, for what you pay at Fender now tons of $$$ for
this is a Natural Relic, with lot of paint chips/scratches ect on the body, wear on the neck ect, this all takes not away the playability and sound of this true gem
its very very light, around 3.3 kilos, really a joy to have around your shoulder,it plays wonderful setup with a 010 set, sound is awesome, this still has the original configuration, like Leo build these,so the position switch in the neck has NO tone(With a capicitor you can also have tone on the neck position, very easy),aka the dark sound, the middle position of course has tone, and then there's the treble pickup,Twang Twang Twang.
lots of pictures up,please note due of the light fall not all are the same in color, but the right color is picture no 10,very nice butterscotch finish.
keep in mind this guitar is 27 years of age,its been played well, but you will like this, these are getting harder and harder to find these days and growing in value very fast.frets still in good condition too
comes with aftermarket tweed case.

Fender stratocaster''Eric Johnson sign''sold
this is a 2006 in very good condition fender stratocaster Eric Johnson Signature.
only used as display model and demo.some minor playwear due of that
the Eric Johson strats became popular in a wink of an eye when they were released by Fender.
this is quality fender all the way, comparable with the Customshop models.
this one is finished in Blond on the Alder body.and of course the V/C maple neck.
see down below its features
Highly contoured two-piece, special-weight selected alder body.
Premium, "thin-skin" nitrocellulous lacquer finish on the neck and body. One-piece quarter-sawn maple neck that goes from a soft "V" at the first fret to a large C beneath the 12th fret, with classic '50's-style blended volutes at the head and heel.
The edges of the neck are softly rolled to feel "played in"
12” fingerboard radius and 21 polished frets
Special staggered vintage-style tuning keys, and deepened headstock face, allow for increased string tension over the nut. This eliminates the need for a string tree - reducing the string drag at the headstock to improve the tremolo accuracy
The custom pickups are wound to Johnson’s specs, and each pickup is unique:
the neck pickup is based on the '54 Strat pickup with oversize Alnico 3 magnets
the middle pickup, based on a '63 Strat pickup, uses specially treated Alnico magnets, and is wound for hum cancellation when used with the neck or bridge pickup
the bridge pickup uses Alnico 5 magnets and is specially voiced to be hotter without sacrificing sparkle
5-way switch
Master volume control
Separate tone controls for the neck and bridge pickups (no tone control for the mid pickup)
Parchment ’57-style pickguard
Five-spring vintage tremolo (with cover plate removed at the factory)
Silver-painted block ’57-style string recess with no paint between the base plate and the block As expected, this guitar is a joy to play with incredible action and tone. It is in mint condition.

Hendrix Tribute Stratocaster (1997-2000)
January 19, 1997, Fender Press Release:
In the late 1960s, Jimi Hendrix single-handedly stretched the sonic possibilities of the guitar and, in the process, changed rock music--forever. In his gifted hands, the instrument became a major vehicle of expression. It talked, cried, exorcised and exulted as he glided with exuberance and ease from searing, blistering, electric blues to feedback-laden, free-form jazz to smoothly crafted torch ballads.
In honor of the guitar-wielding legend, Fender Musical Instruments and Experience Hendrix, LLC (the family of Jimi Hendrix) have just released the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster. "Modeled after the same Strat that Jimi played at his historic performance at the Woodstock Music Festival of August 1969, the instrument is bound to delight generations of guitar players and music history enthusiasts for years and years," noted Jack Shelton, senior vice president of sales at Fender.
For starters, the Jimi Hendrix Stratocaster, which is built in Fender's factory in Corona, California, is a left-handed model strung right-handed and reversed, with
the strap button on the lower horn, so that right-handed players would appear as Jimi did when looking at themselves in the mirror. The guitar, which is available in Olympic White, also boasts a maple neck with a large late-60s-style headstock, classic Schaller "F" tuners and woven strap. The icing on the cake, however, is the pickup configuration--three reverse staggered vintage Stratocaster pickups that are positioned perfectly for boning up on Jimi Hendrix classics such as "Wild Thing," "Purple Haze" or even "The Star Spangled Banner."

Fender Case: Black Tolex® Notes: The 1997 Hendrix Tribute Stratocaster introduces a feature that will reappear on both the 1998 Voodoo Stratocaster and the 2000 '68 Reverse Headstock Strat: a relationship between the bridge pickup and the strings that is the reverse of the norm. In the case of the Tribute Strat this relationship is achieved by reverse stringing the instrument with no change to the bridge pickup itself. On the Voodoo and the '68 Reverse Headstock, it is accomplished by a combination of reverse stringing and reversing the angle and pole staggering of the bridge pickup (these two models are otherwise right-handed bodies).
The importance?
This changes (reverses) the traditional relationship between vibrating string and pickup pole. For example, the low E string now vibrates over the pickup pole that otherwise would be below the high E string, and vice versa. It is believed that this reverse relationship produces different tone characteristics - a somewhat brighter bass and warmer treble, a difference that some believe contributed to the "Hendrix tone".

guitar plays wonderfull and sounds truly amazing, all the legendary Fender sounds are present, but when activating the 12 db boost,it will sound almost like a Gibson LP.
this guitar rocks,it looks wonderful for the age of 25 years,it kept well, comes including original case.
THE ELITE STRATOCASTER
Work on the ELITE series commenced by Fall 1981 and involved a team of people consisting of DAN SMITH, CHIP TODD, JOHN PAGE, CHARLIE GRESSETT and ... FREDDIE TAVARES. It was then an ambitious attempt to blend tradition with modern technologies and as such its prime objectives were to upgrade the electronics, the vibrato system and the neck adjustment. EMG was initially supposed to develop new circuits for FENDER, but could not be finalized. In order to avoid further delay in the release of the model, the active electronics of the ELITE guitars were eventually designed in a cooperative effort between ROGER COX, PAUL GUEGAN and BOB EGGLER. JOHN PAGE devised the refined Freeflyte tremolo/bridge section with drop-in string loading. CHARLIE GESSETT came up with the Biflex truss rod, which makes it possible to adjust the neck curvature in two directions, convex and concave. After months of research and hard work the ELITE STRATOCASTER was finally announced in May 1983 and compared to the existing variants of the Stratocaster it was built with no less than 16 novel features:
1 the Biflex truss rod adjustment
2 a neck angle adjuster located in the neck plate
3 a slightly wider nut width (1.700")
4 a flatter fretboard radius (12")
5 Ezy-Glyder point contact string retainers
6 high ratio, lash-free, specially lubricated tuning gears
7 security lock strap buttons
8 a heavy duty cast bridge assembly with 'drop-in' string loading
9 Freeflyte tremolo system with tension adjustable from the top
10 snap-on Torq-Master tremolo arm
11 Alnico II single coil pickups without protruding poles
12 noise-cancelling pickup system with a dummy coil between the lead and the middle pickups
13 active electronics with a special preamp circuitry including MDX (mid-range) and TBX (high-range) controls
14 three separate pickup push-push/on-off switches
15 an edge-mounted jack output
16 control knobs with a serrated rubber insert
Whereas some of these features could be viewed as refinements of existing concepts, the major deparature from the usual FENDER ethics was undoubtedly the advent of active electronics. Their purpose was to offer a wider range of tones and the quietness of humbucking pickups, while retaining the brilliant single coil attack Fender guitars are associated with. In many respects, the ELITE SERIES certainly outlined the renewed innovating capacities of FENDER, but in an otherwise fairly conservative guitar world it did not prove a milestone as anticipated.
By mid-1983, the new model was released in 3 configurations
* the ELITE STRATOCASTER, with heavy chrome-plated hardware, available with a rosewood fretboard or a one-piece Maple Neck in 6 standard finishes and 9 custom finishes
* the GOLD ELITE STRATOCASTER, same as above except gold electroplated hardware and pearloid buttons on tuners
* the WALNUT ELITE STRATOCASTER, with body and neck crafted from solid American Black Walnut, ebony fretboard, gold-electroplated hardware and pearloid buttons on tuners
Whatever the choice of fretboard (rosewood, maple or ebony), it should be noticed that the neck was sporting a contrasting "skunk stripe" on its back, indicating that the Biflex truss rod was installed from the rear. The Elite body was also characterized by the absence of back recess (and back plate) for the tremolo springs and the small backplate near the edge covered the 9-volt battery required by the active circuitry.
With the introduction of the Elite series, THE STRAT, THE WALNUT STRAT and the GOLD STRATOCASTER were all dropped from the Fender price list of July 1, 1983.
here we have another blast of the past, the top of the Elite series way back in 1983 was this beauty the ''ELITE GOLD''.
the gold not stands for the color, but for the Gold hardware and pearl tuners, this was the Flagship in 1983 for the Fender Stratocaster, high end ax and way ahead of its time,Active electronics with 12 bd boost, new designed Fender Alnico II pickups, gold hardware, pearl tuning buttons,3 push buttons to select pup choice,up to 7 sounds possible.
its plays like butter, and sounds amazing, all the legendary Fender sounds are present, when the 12 db boost is activated this becomes a strat on steriods, just awesome, also there is the TBX tone controll for top high.
these guitars are very sought after today by players and collectors, they will increase in value as we speak

FENDER''THE STRAT'' VINTAGE USA MADE 1980''(sold)
HERE ANOTHER BLAST OF THE PAST THE FENDER ''THE STRAT'' ANOTHER DAN SMITH ERA GUITAR WHICH WAS AHEAD OF ITS TIME BACK IN 1980.
GUITAR IS IN RELIC CONDITION WITH PAINT OFF ECT,ALMOST ALL OF THESE ERA THE STRATS HAVE THIS.
ITS AN AWESOME PLAYING AND SOUNDING GUITAR,INCLUDING ORG CASE,COLLECTORS ITEM .
The "STRAT", a customized and souped-up variation of the Stratocaster, was introduced by Fender at the 1980 NAMM Show. Designed by Gregg Wilson, then chief of guitar R&D at Fender, with the help of Dan Armstrong serving as a consultant, the STRAT tried to blend classic features with modern electronics to rejuvenate the Stratocaster concept. With the STRAT model, Fender gave a nod to the past by reinstating the smaller 1954-1965 pre-CBS headstock design (however, since the original worn-out tooling was used, the STRAT headstock, though smaller than the CBS era design, was not an entirely accurate re-creation of the pre-CBS model); and, like the 1979 25th Stratocaster Anniversary models, the STRAT was fitted with the popular pre-CBS style truss-rod adjustment and four-bolt neck plate, replacing the CBS Bullet truss rod adjustment and three-bolt neck plate. An eye toward the future
Looking forward, in addition to offering a matching headstock (the headstock painted to match the guitar's body color), the STRAT incorporated several noteworthy features:
* a hotter lead pickup (branded the X-1) with a much stronger output than the standard Stratocaster pickup (various X-1 pickups tested were between 6.0 and 8.5 ohms). *a new wiring circuitry delivering 9 different basic tones:
a twin mode rotary selector switch replaced the bottom tone control which when used with the five-way pickup selector switch allowed not only for your standard 5 Stratocaster positions(tones) but also 4 "new" tones never before or since available on a Fender Stratocaster :
neck and middle pickups in series - humbucking
middle and bridge pickups in series - humbucking
neck and bridge pickups in parallel
neck and bridge pickups in parellel, with the middle pickup in series
Thus, the STRAT delivered nine (5+ 4) different basic pickup tones by combining the 5-position switch with the twin rotary selector tone knob. Otherwise the STRAT was fitted with the standard 250k ohm audio taper pots and the "master" tone control carried a regular .05 MFD capacitor. This unique wiring design delivers many tones not usually associated with a Fender Stratocaster and makes the STRAT one of, if not the most, versatile of any era Stratocaster produced by Fender prior to the recently introduced S-1 switching system. *22 carat gold electroplated brass hardware including a re-designed extra massive(sustain) bridge and vibrato block, tuners, and volume/tone knobs that were officially dubbed the "Brassmaster Series". According to Fender, the hardware was actually plated with a 100 micron gold coat (the same as fine jewlery) and for that reason it's rumored that the company lost money on every unit sold. Some very early models are missing the gold tuners (same tuners but in chrome) and the gold plated pickup selector tip because of a delay in parts delivery.
The STRAT could be ordered with either a one-piece maple neck or a maple neck with rosewood fretboard. Three uniquely different neck shapes were available for the STRAT:
1. U shape - a very thick early 50s style "U" shaped neck.
2. D shape - a classic oval "D" shaped neck.
3. C shape- a classic "C" wide flat shaped neck with a flat radius typically only found on 1958 to early 1959 Stratocasters.
The availability of several width/thickness/radius variations indicate that there was no standard neck for the STRAT model.
According to Fender pricelists, the STRAT listed for $995 in 1980 ($250 more than a Stratocaster), was raised to $1,095 in 1981 and was priced at $1,150 in 1982 at which it remained until discontinued in early 1983. price 1400 euro

Three uniquely different neck shapes were available for the STRAT: 1. U shape - a very thick early 50s style "U" shaped neck. 2. D shape - a classic oval "D" shaped neck. 3. C shape- a classic "C" wide flat shaped neck with a flat radius typically only found on 1958 to early 1959 Stratocasters. The availability of several width/thickness/radius variations indicate that there was no standard neck for the STRAT model.
a hotter lead pickup (branded the X-1) with a much stronger output than the standard Stratocaster pickup (various X-1 pickups tested were between 6.0 and 8.5 ohms). *a new wiring circuitry delivering 9 different basic tones: a twin mode rotary selector switch replaced the bottom tone control which when used with the five-way pickup selector switch allowed not only for your standard 5 Stratocaster positions(tones) but also 4 "new" tones never before or since available on a Fender Stratocaster : neck and middle pickups in series - humbucking middle and bridge pickups in series - humbucking neck and bridge pickups in parallel neck and bridge pickups in parellel, with the middle pickup in series Thus, the STRAT delivered nine (5+ 4) different basic pickup tones by combining the 5-position switch with the twin rotary selector tone knob. Otherwise the STRAT was fitted with the standard 250k ohm audio taper pots and the "master" tone control carried a regular .05 MFD capacitor. Fender Telecaster''JV'' Japan Vintage 1984''The Real Deal(sold)
This beautiful JV Series Fender Telecaster is in very good condition and dus (dates to 9-8-84,)
Unlike other guitars, Fender Japan's JV Series are not a purchase, but rather, they're an investment. The value of the JV Series increases year after year as they are perhaps the best quality Fenders ever made, as they are faithful reproductions the original design and features that Leo produced back in the '50s. For full details of the JV Story, Google: JV Series, and you'll read about how their first production made Fender USA executives almost cry when they saw them because their quality is so high.
Here is a description and the specifications for this beautiful Fender JV Telecaster.
NECK DATE: 9-8-84 (Year of Manufacture: September 8th 1984), SERIAL NUMBER: JV96870, COLOR: Butter Scotch Blonde Lacquer Finish, BODY: Premium White Ash, NECK: 1-piece Maple, Oval Type (Nitrocellulose Finish), 25.5mm / 324 Scale, MACHINE HEADS: Vintage Style Tuning Machines, FRETBOARD: 7.25 inch Radi84R) NO. OF FRETS: 21 Vintage Style Frets, WIDTH AT NUT: 1.650 (42mm), HARDWARE: Chrome, PICKUPS: 2 Vintage Single-Coil Tele Pickups (cloth wired), CONTROLS: Master Volume, Master Tone, BRIDGE: Original Vintage Style Tele Bridge with 3 Brass T-Saddles, PICKUP SWITCHING: 3-Position Blade: Position 1. Bridge Pickup 2. Neck & Bridge Pickup 3. Neck Pickup, PICKGUARD: 1-Ply Black Bakelite, Fender Gig Bag. This guitar is completely cloth wired.
As can be seen from the pictures, the body shines, there are only a few minor blemishes shown on our Guitar Pics page. The guitar is completely cloth wired, comes with its original 25 year old gig bag (also in excellent shape) minimal to zero fretwear, the neck is straight on the guitar. The guitar was well cared for over the years and in fact still has its price tag still on the back of the headstock: 65, which means it cost 65,000 yen in 1984. Also, when Fender Japan first started making the JV Series, they were making nameplates for the owners that bought them. This is very rare that the guitar till has its original owners nameplate. It says: Yutaka Hasegawa, which can easily be removed with a screw driver. All parts are original to the guitar, except the strings.
This rare 26 year old JV is in excellent excellent condition. Beautiful waves of grain can be seen through the butterscotch lacquer. This JV Telecaster is a collectors item and has a warm deep tone that comes with age.

FENDER STRATOCASTER JV ST 62-115 FLAGSHIP JAPAN VINTAGE 1982/83(sold) This is a highly sought after early 1983 JV Serial ST62-115 Fender Stratocaster '62 reissue domestic only model. If you're looking at this auction you probably already know about the ST62-115 model. It was the top flagship model produced in 1982 and 1983. This one is the more rare "first decal" model. There are a lot of the lower model ST62-65 and ST62-85 floating around but the ST62-115 is very hard to find, especially in this condition.
You can read more about the ST62-115 and JV Strats ON THE SQUIER PAGES.
All the hype on these JV ST62-115 models isn't just hype. I would put this Strat up against almost any Strat out there. I think it's that great! This guitar kicks some serious A** and will only appreciate so it's a solid investment.
Neck date: 3-10-83
POT date: R1378226 (CTS; 26th week of 1982)
Condition:
This guitar is in fantastic condition for a guitar this old. The neck is straight. The truss rod functions properly. The action is low without buzzing when played at a normal attack. The frets are still in great condition. The original 3-way switch is still installed. None of the electronics have been tampered with with the original solder unbroken/untampered with all around. The pickguard is crack free. The plastic back plate has a few cracks near a few screw holes (very common for backplates). The tuners work great. The tremolo arm is missing. The hard case is in great condition for it's age.
Made in Japan (MIJ) by Fujigen-gakki
